Assistant Inspector General for Investigations

David Johnson was appointed the Assistant Inspector General for Investigations in May 2019. In this capacity, Mr. Johnson serves as the principal executive in charge of the Office of Investigations, overseeing criminal and civil investigations involving fraud, waste, and abuse at the Department of Veterans Affairs. He is responsible for managing a directorate of approximately 250 special agents, analysts, auditors, and other professionals assigned to offices nationwide.

Mr. Johnson previously served for over a decade as a federal prosecutor. He was an assistant chief in the Fraud Section of the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division, as well as an Assistant United States Attorney and Health Care Fraud Coordinator at the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Mr. Johnson also served as an Assistant Chief Litigation Counsel at the Securities and Exchange Commission. He began his career as an associate at an international law firm and a law clerk for the Honorable Rosemary M. Collyer on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

Mr. Johnson received his bachelor of arts in government from the University of Virginia and his juris doctor from the William & Mary Law School. He previously served as an adjunct law professor at Georgetown University Law Center.
