R. James (Jamie) Mitchell was appointed the Assistant Inspector General for Special Reviews in November 2022. In this position, he is responsible for overseeing the Office of Inspector General’s (OIG) administrative investigations involving allegations of senior leader misconduct, mismanagement, gross waste of funds, and abuse of authority, as well as other reviews intended to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of VA programs and operations.

The workforce Mr. Mitchell manages is composed of senior investigative attorneys, administrative investigators, auditors, analysts, and other professionals, offering a diversity of talent that provides the Inspector General with the flexibility and capacity to conduct sophisticated, multidisciplinary reviews.

Mr. Mitchell joined the OIG in January 2017 as an attorney in the Office of the Counselor to the Inspector General before becoming the Deputy Assistant Inspector General for Special Reviews in 2018 when the directorate was newly formed.

Before joining the OIG, he spent more than 10 years as an attorney in private practice at a global law firm where he focused on high-profile, high-stakes corporate investigations, government enforcement defense, and litigation. He holds a bachelor of arts in political science from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and a juris doctorate from the Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law, and maintains an active bar membership in the District of Columbia.
