David Krulak, MD, was appointed the Assistant Inspector General for Healthcare Inspections in May 2026. In this position, he is responsible for Office of Inspector General (OIG) initiatives that review the quality of health care provided to veterans in Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers, clinics, and nursing homes, in addition to the care provided to veterans through various healthcare contracts. He also provides consultation to the investigation and audit sections of the OIG.

Before joining the VA OIG, Dr. Krulak was the director of the TRICARE Health Plan at the Defense Health Agency, where he was responsible for programmatic, operational, and policy matters pertaining to the worldwide management of private sector healthcare, managing a $20 billion budget for healthcare services covering 9.5 million beneficiaries. 

As a military officer, Dr. Krulak’s leadership roles included serving as the Commanding Officer of the US Naval Hospital Okinawa, Executive Officer of US Naval Hospital Yokosuka, and the Director of Branch Clinics and Public Health at Naval Hospital Pensacola. In the private sector, he was the Chief Medical Officer for Healthcare Corporation of America’s Doctors Hospital of Augusta. 

Dr. Krulak’s military staff tours included Surgeon General of the Defense Intelligence Agency and Command Surgeon for US Marine Corps Forces, Pacific. His operational tours were as Senior Medical Officer on the USS John C. Stennis, Command Surgeon of the Marine Corps Special Operations Support Group, Flight Surgeon for Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 214, and Tactical Systems Officer on the USS Tennessee.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Rice University; a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University; a Master of Business Administration from Oklahoma State University; and a Doctor of Medicine from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He completed a residency in family medicine at the Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and in aerospace medicine at the Naval Operational Medical Institute in Florida. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
